Frequently Asked Questions

What is TeenWorks?

TeenWorks is a non-profit organization dedicated to preparing high school students for post-secondary education and workforce opportunities.

What does TeenWorks Summer Program offer?

We provide employment opportunities for high school students who may not have previous work experience or want to gain new skills. Our program includes weekly professional development workshops covering topics such as financial literacy, professional attire, resume writing, and interview skills.

We strive to match students with worksites that align with their career interests, though we may not always have the exact match. However, we aim to get as close as possible.

How long is the program?

The program runs for 6 weeks, depending on the city hosting it. Students work on-site 4 days a week and participate in professional development workshops one day a week.

A typical workday is from 8 AM to 2 PM (transportation times may vary).

How much do we get paid?

Teen employees earn between $8.00 and $10.00 per hour, depending on their seniority in the program. Over the six weeks, students can earn between $1,200 and $1,400, including bonuses for "Employee of the Week" awards.

How old do I have to be to participate?

To participate, you must be a current high school student and at least 14 years old. You are eligible if you turn 14 before the summer program start date.

Is there overtime?

No, there are no opportunities for overtime. Our work hours are Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 2 PM, during the summer. However, some students have chosen to work part-time jobs in the evenings or weekends in addition to their programming work.

Will taxes be taken out of my paycheck?

Yes, taxes will be deducted from your gross pay.

What if I am an undocumented student, Dreamer, DACA recipient, student with disabilities, or do not have a social security number?

We welcome all students regardless of citizenship status. We encourage you to contact the Director for further assistance if you have any questions.

We offer limited accommodation for students with disabilities. Please get in touch with the Program Manager for specific questions and support options. .

When do we get paid?

Students are paid bi-weekly via direct deposit. We also facilitate a bank visit on hiring day to help open bank accounts. Students without a bank account will receive a pay card for direct deposit.

What happens after I apply?

After applying, you’ll receive a confirmation email acknowledging receipt of your application. In March, you will receive an email invitation for Interview Day.

Please check your email regularly and ensure your inbox is clear for communications from us.

What if I don’t have transportation to work?

We provide transportation from designated high schools or pick-up sites near your residence to the worksite. We do not provide transportation directly from residences.

Students must use the program’s provided transportation; personal drop-offs at worksites are not allowed.

Can I still work if I participate in sports or another extracurricular activity during the summer?

It is possible to work while participating in other activities. However, if your activity conflicts with our work hours (8 AM - 2 PM), you won't receive the full benefits of the program, so it’s not encouraged to apply.
